Established in 1964, the Centre is an acute general hospital providing a full range of acute, rehabilitation, ambulatory and community medical services to in-patients and out-patients. It offers these in a one-stop setting that is also known as "single episode care", and they reflect the needs of its patients, many of whom are ageing and low-income people, as well as recently arrived immigrants. The Hospital maintains close ties with its parent organisation, Caritas-Hong Kong, and a strong Catholic culture that is summed up by its motto: "Love in the Service of Hope". The Hospital has completed its second phase of redevelopment project in the first quarter of 2014. Its ambulatory and rehabilitation block, Wai Ming Block, has already commenced service. The modernized facilities will enable the Hospital to satisfy the public’s ever-increasing demand for quality healthcare more fully.
